Shadow Work for the Summer Solstice

The longest day of the year calls for inner reflection.

[In the northern hemisphere, we are experiencing the longest day of the year. In Vedic timekeeping, this is the mark of Dakshinayana when the Sun starts to travel south of the Equator. Another marker is July 16th, when the Sun is in Cancer per sidereal astronomy.]Ā

Most oriental systems of thought talk about detoxing the body during each season but what about the mind and the spirit?

Summer is associated with the Pita dosha, which is made up of both water and fire elements.Ā

Because of the heat all around the world, this causes aggravation and emotional discomfort, which can lead to triggers if not handled correctly.Ā

For the physical:Ā

A huge part of shadow work is self-care. Our health is the most important part of our healing journey. Without proper health regimens, we can suffer more greatly in the emotional and spiritual realms.

Add more of these:

Seasonal fruits likeĀ watermelon, cherries, peaches, berries, and grapes.

Vegetables like leafy greens, cucumber, celery, okra and bitter melon (gourd).

Herbs like coriander (cilantro), rose petals, fennel,Ā basil, mint, thyme, oregano, and bay.

Early morning walks or during sunset, swimming, and yoga.Ā

For the Emotional:Ā

What lies in the shadow are usually repressed emotions that are tied to memories. Allow yourself the time to explore why certain emotions are being triggered and how to move forward without being dictated by the past.

Donā€™t rush things; take yourĀ time with your projects as you water them.Ā

Take time to contemplate what fire you are cultivating and how to stay emotionally nourished.

For the Spiritual:

Often dismissed in modern shadow work processes, the spirit needs daily attention. Even a 5 minute silent meditation can make a difference when trying to connect with your own essence.

Spend time outdoors with nature and close community.

Visit spiritual spaces like temples. Go on a retreat and/or be a part of a bigger ceremonial space.

Journal Prompts to explore more:Ā

  1. What shadow in the subconscious wants to be illuminated at this time?Ā

  2. How can you water your spiritual integration?Ā

  3. What stops you from shining your light the brightest?
